A bold, innovative and realistic approach to savings for the new era

Simon Bates – Head of Public Sector

This week marks a new era for the public sector – one which demands urgent change. There is no shortage of ideas on how to reform the public sector. For those public servants charged with turning such ideas into reality, the short term agenda should be all about reducing the cost of delivering effective services in any way possible - moving beyond back office efficiency - whilst recognising that incoming ministers will of course have expectations about the new agendas they want to kick off.

Success will surely both require and depend upon new, more complex and dynamic models of operation and collaboration – between government departments, national, regional and local organisations and service providers like Atos. And the reward? - brand new potential for significant savings by removing the cost of hand-offs and duplication across organisational and/or supply silos.

Atos' approach, which we call OE+, contains both ideas and specific implementation tools that develop a clear line of sight across services, from front to back-office and, crucially, across organisational silos. It is a bold, innovative and realistic take on how to cut cost. It can contribute quickly to meeting Departments’ and Agencies’ most urgent priorities. And, most importantly, it delivers service improvements as well as savings.

Conventional wisdom suggests that a hung Parliament will lead to a period of paralysis in the scoping and deployment of solutions for transformation and cost reduction. But perhaps it need not – perhaps it could “de-politicise” the short term agenda, allowing us all to focus on solid, sensible improvement initiatives. After all, it's not all about big spending decisions - there is still much that can be done to get the most out of existing investment, a philosophy that we may as well start getting used to.
